![]() This was before the rules even allowed for women to run in the race! But Kathrine was able to obtain an official entry to the race. In 1967, Kathrine became the first woman ever to compete in the Boston Marathon. So when her college coach told her that a woman could not finish a (26.2 mile) marathon, she set out to prove him wrong! Online condolences at Switzer loved to run. Joan is preceded in death by: her parents: John and Rosetta Goble Sr Daughter: Kathleen Switzer three brothers: John, Raymond and Ralph Goble and a sister: Dorothy Gray. Survivors include: her daughters: Brenda (Bob) Lomax and Sheila (Richard) Racioppi a son: Jeff (Lynette) Switzer six grandchildren: Ryan Phillips, Michael Phillips, Kayla Reveal, Samantha Niebrugge, Zachary Switzer and Dane Lomax as well as: eight great-grandchildren: Alivia and Alaina Phillips, Aria and Graisyn Reveal, Gabe, Grant and Grayson Switzer, and Macy Lomax. Joan was born on November 25, 1939, in Danville, Illinois to John and Rosetta Waroquier Goble Sr. Joan Irene Switzer, 83, of Catlin, Illinois, passed away at 10:30 am on Wednesday, March 1, 2023, at her daughter's home in Champaign, Illinois.
